Currently in development, Ocean
Planet (working title), will be produced
and distributed by MacGillivray Freeman Films. A combination of breathtaking
visual montages and inspirational music with only minimal narration,
Ocean Planet will celebrate the power and vitality of Earth's most precious
resource-water-as well as its limitations and vulnerability to man's
growing presence on the planet. From the vastness of the earth's ocean
to the tiniest teardrop, Ocean Planet will give a new perspective to
man's dependence on this vital resource and to our ever-increasing responsibility
to preserve it.
"This film will be unique in that it is an artistic interpretation of
a natural phenomenon," said director Greg MacGillivray. "We will push
our own boundaries as filmmakers to deliver a beautifully shot, enigmatic
film that will leave audiences with a feeling of awe and wonder." Ocean
Planet is the fourth of a series of ocean-themed films produced by MacGillivray
Freeman Films.
Also in development, The Blue Nile (working title) is a co-production
of MacGillivray Freeman Films and Orbita Max, a production company based
in Barcelona. Featuring some of the most diverse and extreme landscapes
in the world, the film will be shot in Africa and Spain where production
is scheduled to begin in 2003. The production team includes award-winning
broadcast journalist Jordi Llompart Mallorques as the film's director
and large-format veteran Almuth Itzen as Executive Producer.
The Nile is the longest and the most famous world's river because of
its exotic, beauty and the ancient civilizations that it sheltered,
from Alexandria (Egypt) to the Rift Valley (Ethiopia), from the Mediterranean
Sea to the heart of East Africa, the birth of the Blue Nile. There,
many different cultures coexist with spectacular and unknown cultural
heritage as the eleven rock Churches of Lalibela. "The upper region
of the Nile has a history as long as the river itself," said Llompart.
"For thousands of years many unique cultures have depended on the river
for survival." With its vast environmental and historical richness,
this topic lends itself perfectly to the educational storytelling medium
of giant screen documentaries."
MacGillivray Freeman Films is currently in script development for Space
Journey, a giant screen film about one of the most intriguing scientific
pursuits in the modern space program--the search for life. Space Journey
promises to inspire even greater interest in the questions: "Are we
alone? Is there life beyond Earth?" The film will be directed by Greg
MacGillivray with a script by Nick Sagan, son of legendary astronomer
Carl Sagan.
Harrison Smith, General Manager for MacGillivray Freeman Films who negotiated
the deals, noted, "MacGillivray Freeman Films is passionately committed
to delivering top-quality product that serves the needs of the giant
screen exhibition community. We are excited to be collaborating with
such a wide array of partners on this new roster of films and we look
forward to many future years of working closely with giant screen theatre
operators to foster the continuing success of the large-format industry."
MacGillivray Freeman Films is the world's leading independent producer
and distributor of large-format motion pictures for the giant screen
industry with twenty-eight titles in its film library. Founded in 1963
by Greg MacGillivray and the late Jim Freeman, MacGillivray Freeman
has received numerous critical awards for its motion pictures including
two Academy AwardŽ nominations for Best Documentary Short Subject, in
1995 for The Living Sea and in 2000 for Dolphins. Producer/Director
Greg MacGillivray has shot more 70mm film than anyone in the history
of the large format industry and was instrumental in the development
of multiple new IMAX cameras including the first-ever lightweight IMAX
camera used to climb to the top of Mt. Everest. In 1996, MacGillivray
Freeman Film's inaugural 1976 large-format film, To Fly! was selected
by the Library of Congress for inclusion in the National Film Archives
where it joined such classics as Citizen Kane and Gone With The Wind
as one of the most important films of the last century.
Two years later, MacGillivray Freeman Films made industry history again
when its 1998 blockbuster hit Everest became the fastest-grossing giant
screen film ever and the first to reach the top ten box office chart
for North America. Everest has grossed over $115 million worldwide.
